Peace, Winter, Lemons

Peace, Winter, Lemons
February 22, 2011 Colleen Emery

Our family doesn’t watch the news. We don’t own a TV so watching the nightly news or morning news doesn’t happen around here. I used to watch the news, read the newspapers, thinking that I was all up on what was going on in the world. But, I don’t anymore. I do keep up on the World’s events through alternative media sources, mostly internet/blog type stuff. We are very lucky to have access to media that isn’t based on smokes and ladders and propaganda based mistruths. Today, I am grateful for the fact I live in peace. My heart goes out to those who aren’t. My gratitude for this is hard to express.

I am also grateful today for Winter. I am grateful to live where I experience a true Winter. Winter is the season that shows us we are at the mercy of Mother Nature. I love that we bundle in many layers, I love the clothes in winter, the sound of the snow crunching under your boots and how the sun only peaks above the horizon for a short time in the darkest parts of Winter. I love the silence Winter can bring when a huge storm blows in and everyone is tucked away warm in their homes. I love the smell of wood smoke coming from the fireplaces and wood stoves. Most of all I love the hibernation effect of Winter and how we tuck away and are internal for a while.

Finally, lemons. Not so 100 mile diet of me but my favorite fruit is lemons. I am grateful I have access to lemons and can have them everyday. One day maybe I will have a lemon tree in my greenhouse extraordinaire. One can dream….
